Form 4868: Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File US Individual Income Tax Return
If you cannot file your federal tax return by the April 18, 2023 deadline, you can request an extension. An extension grants you an automatic six-month extension until October 16, 2023. You can file Form 4868 by mail or online.
Important note: Filing an extension only grants you additional time to file your tax return. If you have a balance due, the deadline to pay remains April 18, 2023.
