Wells' Pair of Two-Out Homers Help Yankees Best Cardinals

Stroman Shines in Victory, Wells Provides Offensive Fireworks

Yankees 6, Cardinals 3

Gleyber Torres smashed a two-run homer to center in the first inning, only to see the Cardinals tie it in the third. However, Aaron Judge led off the fourth with a single, and two outs later, Josh Donaldson walked to put two on for Matt Carpenter, who fanned for the second out.

Up next, Anthony Rizzo singled, scoring Judge and giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Wells hit a two-out, two-run homer off Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks, putting New York up by three. Hicks walked Isiah Kiner-Falefa and hit Torres to load the bases, but he got DJ LeMahieu to ground out to end the inning.

Chris Stroman allowed only one hit over the first four innings, striking out five. He walked two batters in the fifth, but Paul DeJong grounded into a double play to end the inning and escape the jam. Lars Nootbaar doubled to lead off the sixth, and Brendan Donovan singled him home, cutting the lead to 6-3.

Stroman departed after 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six. Miguel Castro got the final two outs of the sixth, and Jonathan Loaisiga struck out the side in order in the seventh. Lucas Luetge walked the first two batters in the eighth, bringing the tying run to the plate, but he got Donovan to ground into a double play and ended the inning by getting DeJong to fly out to Judge in right.

Aroldis Chapman walked the leadoff batter in the ninth, but he retired the next three hitters to close it out, earning his first save of the season. Jordan Montgomery will start for the Yankees on Tuesday as they play the second game of their series in St. Louis.
